The American lobster, also known as the Atlantic lobster, is the largest lobster species.
Its color can vary from greenish brown to bright blue, depending on its diet, genetics, and exposure to light. 1 blue lobster is seen in a million chances. A genetic defect causes these lobsters to produce an excessive amount of protein that combines with another molecule to give it a blue color. Typically 10 percent of American lobsters have two different-sized claws.
The large gripper is used for crushing; small claws are used for tearing. Scientists estimate that American lobsters can live up to 100 years, these lobsters can easily live for years in a professional lobster aquarium.
