Like humans, lobsters need oxygen to live. They obtain this oxygen from the sea water in which they live. How much oxygen they consume depends on the temperature of the water. As the temperature of the water increases, their oxygen uptake also increases. Interestingly, as the temperature increases, the amount of oxygen in seawater decreases.
Lobsters use gills to breathe. Their gills are filled with blood, hairy organs that extract oxygen from the water. The gills can be found at the bottom of the lobster’s legs. Blood passes through the gills to other parts of the body and provides oxygen along the way. To ensure a regular supply of oxygen, the gills circulate air for our respiratory system to breathe, circulating water for the lobsters.
Lobsters can consume the water they accumulate in their gills for about 48 hours, depending on the temperature. For this reason, the lobster can live for 48 hours in a cold environment, provided that it is placed on a damp towel or newspaper.
What color is lobster blood?
A lobster’s blood is colorless. It develops a bluish color when exposed to oxygen.
Why do lobsters turn red when cooked?
All the pigments that make up a lobster shell are destroyed by heat, with the exception of the red pigment. This is why lobsters turn brown when cooked.
Is lobster breeding possible?
While many people have tried to increase lobsters commercially for years, they have all been unsuccessful. It takes so long for a lobster to reach a marketable size that it is not financially feasible to grow them.
How do you know if the lobster is male or non-lobster?
The plumage under the tail is browner and softer on the outside, if it is hard and light colored, it is male.
The tail is wide to carry the eggs, while it is narrower in the males.
